Meritage is a regulated term for wines made from two or more "noble" Bordeaux grape varieties (no single variety can make up more than 90% of the blend). The 2018 vintage is a lighter-bodied blend of 63% Cabernet Franc, 25% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Sauvignon. To give it a local twist, the wine is aged exclusively in Canadian oak barrels.
Light colored, medium bodied, showing aromas and flavours of blackberry, strawberry, cherry nicely interplaying with notes of tobacco, vanilla, mocha, toasty oak and a touch of black pepper. The finish is smooth and juicy with a crisp acidity.
Best Serving Temperature 16° to 19° C.
Normally we like our red grapes to develop additional flavour by staying on the vines until mid-November. However, the 2018 vintage consisted of a super hot, dry summer followed by an extremely wet fall. Harvesting took place between wet days in October. The wine was aged in primarily one and two year old Canadian oak barrels for 17 months. Shortly before bottling eight barrels were selected and blended to create the finished wine.
Food Pairing Notes
You can enjoy a glass of this wine on its own and it is a lovely match with white meats, such as pork and chicken, particularly with a smoky note from the grill. It also goes well with pasta or chicken with tomato sauce, and fatty fish such as salmon.
